From July 26 to August 11, 2006 four McCallie students and two teachers took part in the fish eradication and juvenile release portions of the project.

In addition to the presentation, we'll have our annual elections. We'll also have snack food and drinks."

2006-06-25 log from rwilson. 6 fish on the Hiwassee River.

Log Entry
rwilson writes "My oldest son and I had an opportunity to fish with Don Denney on the Hiwassee. It was overcast and it rained lightly off and on. We started fishing with dries and caught fish consistently before the water shut down. When the water started dropping, we moved to nymphs and continued to catch fish, although the fishing slowed. I ended up catching 6 and missing about as many. Don had about the same. It was nice to finally wet a line and it was nice to finally fish with Don. Thanks for letting us hang out Don.

2006-04-29 log from rwilson. 2 fish on the South Holston.
Posted by admin on Sunday, May 07 @ 20:34:33 EDT (4781 reads)
Log Entry
rwilson writes "Charlie, John, Don, Rick, and I fished the South Holston on Saturday afternoon. Charlie, John, and I fished below the weir dam and caught several while Don and Rick fished above the weir dam. They also caught several. Steve came by and took us to another part of the river. Unfortunately, several people had the same idea. Don, Rick, and John found a spot and Charlie and I after looking a bit, decided to head back for dinner. I caught two, and lost four, one of somewhat substantial size. grrrrr. Later that evening, the other three returned to camp and they had caught around ten each. This was my first time fishing this stream and look forward to fishing it again.

2006-05-06 log from rwilson. 15 fish on the Sycamore Creek.
Posted by admin on Sunday, May 07 @ 20:17:23 EDT (4730 reads)
Log Entry
rwilson writes "Jim, Gary, and I fished Sycamore Creek. We walked up the creek for about a mile and then fished from there up stream for another mile. We used dry flies. This was the first time I'd fished a stream this small and for a while I was one for ten or so. Eventually I was able to get the hang of it and finished with 15 fish. One thing interesting about this stream is in higher elevations, there are brook trout. Jim caught a few brookies, but I hadn't managed to catch one. At the end of the day, they let me have the stream to myself and I fished until I caught one, my first brook trout. What a beautiful fish. Thanks to Jim and Gary for letting a small stream newbie hang out with them and learn a few tricks. By the way, this was very physical fishing, climbing over rocks through the water. Catching that brookie made it all worth it. Jim and Gary caught between 25-30 fish each.

2005-06-03 log from Baitshop. 11 fish on the North River.
Posted by admin on Sunday, May 07 @ 20:15:53 EDT (4736 reads)
Log Entry
Baitshop writes "Friend in from Indiana. He wanted to fish the Hiawassee, however the generation schedule changed to all day long so I suggested the North River. Did really well, I ran out of fingers to count my catch so stopped at 11, he ended up with 3. Caught a couple very nice browns (for the North River they were nice). I usually only catch the little 5 - 7" rainbows (thus "baitshop" monikor given by non mountain fishing friends who stay in warm waters and catch those big green fish measured in pounds verse inches) so the 12" plus browns were a nice treat. Nothing really visible hatching, few light colored flys, not many though.

Trout Unlimited Works to Restore Brook Trout to the Southern Appalachians
Posted by admin on Thursday, May 04 @ 16:19:47 EDT (4860 reads)
Appalachian Chapter of Trout Unlimited
rwilson writes "Brook trout are the only trout native to the eastern United States. Their numbers have diminished over the past decades to levels that threaten their extirpation in many areas. Trout Unlimited has initiated a program – Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture – to restore these beautiful fish to portions of their original range. The Appalachian Chapter of Trout Unlimited (Chattanooga Area) has been working with a number of partners to restore brook trout to streams in the Tellico Area on the Cherokee National Forest. See the full article here."

About This Site
I grew up fishing on Chickamauga Lake near Chattanooga, Tennessee. Over the years, I've enjoyed being on the lake with friends, trying to catch whatever would bite, while not getting too concerned when they didn't.
