Sorting Fishing Tackle

Tue, 03/09/2010 - 04:29
I just had my boat detailed to get ready for the state Top Six and had to take everything out of it. It is amazing how much junk and tackle I haul around! I bet my boat would run ten miles and hour faster without carrying so much extra weight.

As always I planned on sorting out everything before putting it back into the boat. As always, I started out pretty good, putting plugs back in boxes and sacks where they belong and putting the boxes into the right places. Then I hit the big bags of plastics, and as usual, just gave up and filled up a rod locker with them. Then I found three more big bags I had overlooked!

How To Fish A Carolina Rig

Mon, 03/08/2010 - 05:02
Carolina rigs took the fishing world by storm a few years ago when some tournaments were won on them. I first started fishing this type rig in the early 1970's, calling it either a split shot rig or a swivel worm rig. Carolina rigs should be part of any fisherman's arsenal now.

Life Jackets and Kill Switches

Sun, 03/07/2010 - 05:31
Everyone knows fast boats can kill you. But a simple action that takes only a few seconds can save your life. Every time you crank your engine on a boat, especially a bass boat, you should be wearing your life jacket and have a kill switch attached. Although foot gas controls on boats have helped, you don't want your gas motor in gear and running if you get thrown out. And you want to stay afloat. Most tournaments require life jackest to be worn and kill switches attached any time the big motor is running.

Buying a Boat

Sat, 03/06/2010 - 05:18
It is often said the two happiest days in a boat owners life are the day he buys the boat and the day he sells it. Buying a boat brings out all kinds of emotions, some good and some bad. Some of us go through the process several times and others find once is enough. I have bought seven bass boats, four new ones and three used ones, and each one is special in many ways. Here are some of the emotions I feel when buying a bass boat.

Do You Need A Sebile Magic Swimmer Sinking Model Swimbait In Your Tacklebox?

Fri, 03/05/2010 - 05:39
The Sebile Magic Swimmer is an excellent hard swimbait that has very realistic action. The original version got a lot of attention when some tournaments were won with them. The original model sinks, but slowly. Some fishermen wanted a bait that would get deeper faster so Sebile came out with the sinking model. It fills a needed niche in your tacklebox - a hard swim bait that will get deeper faster but still have good action.

Have you used a Sebile Magic Swimmer, either an original or sinking model? What do you think about it? Share your comments in the section below.

Glass and Brass For Bass Fishing

Fri, 03/05/2010 - 05:32
It may sound more like a home decorating tip than something you use for fishing, but glass and brass might help you catch more bass. Brass refers to brass sinkers and glass to glass beads when you use them on Carolina rigs. Give this set-up a try to make more noise with your Carolina rig and see if it helps you catch more bass.

Alligator gar are ugly fish that get huge. They are some of the biggest fish in North America, reaching 350 pounds and 10 feet long. Who Do You Think Is the Best Bass Fisherman Of The Decade?

Sun, 02/28/2010 - 06:01
Everyone has their favorite professional bass fisherman. But which one is the top right now? Who would you pick as the best bass fisherman of the first decade of the 21st Century?

Check my choice and the reasons I chose him. Then share your comments about my pick in the comments section below. If you disagree with my pick, tell us your pick and give your reasons for choosing that angler in the Reader's Respond section.

I chose Kevin Van Dam as Bass Fisherman of the Decade and he started out the new decade by winning the Bassmasters Classic in February, 2010. This win, his third in Bassmasters Classics, emphasizes his ability to find and catch fish under tough conditions and out fish many of his fellow professional bass fishermen,

How does he do it? What do you think?

Do I Have To Kill That Fish To Have It Mounted?

Sun, 02/21/2010 - 05:15
I have several mounted bass on the wall at my house. Two of them died after being caught in a tournament. Another is the first eight pounder I caught. But my biggest bass, a 9 pound 7 ounce bass, was released after weighing it in a tournament. I had a replica mount made of it and am satisfied with the results.

Fishing Muddy Water
